This is our first pregnancy and we could not be anymore excited. But hey, over the past week, I’ve been realizing the crazy costs. I’ve ignored them until now cause I was just in the stage of excitement and joy. Now, I have to realize the challenges that come along with caring for a baby, and entire family.
I’m sure most mothers would agree that diapers and formula are one of the top expenses with a baby. I’m going to attempt to breastfeed for a while, as formula is just crazily expensive. As for diapers, I hear to estimate 10 diapers/ day. But, sometimes you even have those that go through more… Yes, diapers are expensive — but, how much do they break your wallet?
The best tip I’ve gotten so far from a current mother is AmazonMom. It’s $79/year, but you also get 20% off of diapers & wipes.. plus, they deliver it all right to your door! The upfront cost seems steep, but overall, think how many boxes of wipes and diapers you go through, as well as conveniently getting them to your door-step in TWO days, free shipping. My fiance already had an AmazonPrime account, so he got it for free
Size 4, Pampers were 0.17 cents/diaper on AmazonMom, versus 0.24 cents/diaper on Target. While Target doesn’t give free shipping to their bulk purchases. Depending on the number of diapers used, subtracting the membership, that’s an approx. $150 difference within the first year.
No matter what, you are spending a lot of money on diapers alone. It’s just rather you do the research and save an extra $100+ per year. For some, that savings means everything.. others, it may not be worth the extra time of researching. Now, as I completely sound like a infomercial, I will end on a positive note.
What types of diapers do you use? Is there any program you use to get cheaper diapers? What is the best for your money, that you’ve found?
With my first child, Serenity, I was seduced by all the brand nappies like Pampers and all that. I tried Huggies but she got rashy all the time. By the time she was in potty training ones, I had figured out that unnamed brand were just as good. So with my second child I used store’s own brand nappies and to this day I have had no issues, the Pampers ones leaked a lot. And there is about £4 difference between them, as well as quantity.
well, that is very good to know. I just cannot believe how big an expense diapers are, and then they get thrown away so quickly. It just boggles my mind – but, clearly it’s a big demand for babies. Therefore, they are allowed to charge such a steep amount of money…. sigh :\
What is your thoughts about cloth nappies? My baby is 6 months old and we have been using them for the past few months. I have the modern ones that work almost like disposables and to be honest they are not that much extra work. All I have to do is to throw them in a pail in the laundry room instead of the trash and I have 1 extra load of washing every three days. I have estimated that we have already saved the upfront cost of about $300. Best of all they can be used for a second or even a third child! I never thought about the cost of diapers when I was pregnant and used huggies until my mum bought me a few modern cloth nappies and now I rather spend my money on cute baby clothes.
Honestly, I have never given them one thought. but after researching about them, I’ve realized they are a lot more modernized than they have been. I really didn’t know how popular they were.. there’s actually a store near me that sells a ton of cloth diapers, as well as eco-friendly type baby products. Although, the price is up there, but I suppose after a while they pay for themselves… something I will definitely look into!
